Lamberts
We stopped at Lambert's for dinner. As you may be able to tell, the decor is rustic and old fashioned, all the staff wear blue shirts/blouses, red suspenders and ties, with black aprons. They are high school or college age and very cheerful and friendly.
They advertise as the 'Home of the Throwed Roll'. So we were expecting something. Still it was startling. We were seating and looking at the menu when the young man walked into the center of the room and called 'Hot rolls'.
Lori looked up to see who yelled and he threw a warm dinner roll to her from across the room - say about twenty feet. It doesn't require any signal that you want one or much more than looking interested and a roll comes flying at you.
The food was tasty - Lori had a very good mushroom, Swiss cheese burger and I had pot roast.
However there are two additions:
The first is that another waiter walks around with their sorghum molasses, they have butter and honey on the table, but the molasses is special. It is lighter than regular molasses and very flavorful for the rolls.
And the other is 'fixins'. Waiters/waitresses walk by with metal kettles of fried okra, macaroni and tomatoes, black-eyed peas, fried potatoes and something else.
I also had turnip greens which were delicious. Oh, the red-topped bottle on the table has vinegar with jalepenos in it - that goes on whatever you want, but is surprisingly good on greens, etc.
So Lori's glass, if you can call that huge mug a glass, says 'Heads Up' which is a reference to the rolls.
The story is that years ago, a regular customer wanted a roll and the waitress was busy, he yelled at her, "just throw it". So she did and the tradition began.
