Koi September 2010

I decided to try again with the koi in a better light situation. Still not quite on. The remaining very large female is also the most aggressive eater. The one spot behind her head is a nice feature. She is swimming above two sanke and a showa is to her right.

This main koi is a sanke. He is also the only survivor from the original six koi when we built the pond. The smaller koi under his tail is a variation of a shushi koi except the color on the upper sides is a pale blue, it would usually be red. This koi is also one that grew from the spawning in our own pond. It is a very unusual fish. The koi at the far left is a goshiki -which means 'five colors'

This showa is probably the best quality koi in the pond. The black is very deep. It is also unusual in that it has a good quality red spot in it's head and then the red is in individual spots on the sides. A beautiful male koi.

Another sanke, this one has a metallic quality to the color, it is smooth without visible scales [which means they are very small scales]. This is called gin rin
